Release Schedule
ScanImage 5 will :
- unify galvo and resonant scanning capabilities (ScanImage 3 and 4, respectively); and
- support the use of generic resonant scanning hardware with real-time FPGA processing.
By version 5.1, ScanImage 5 will support experiments combining resonant and galvo scanning. This will include random-access and other custom scan trajectories, suited for photostimulation and multi-site recording applications.
be released in 2014. The next version, ScanImage 2015, will add new features to ScanImage 5.

Resonant Scanning Hardware
For resonant scanned raster imaging, the following digitizer/scanner hardware is required:
Digitizer Hardware
Tip |
---|
Users should order from NI using Bundle ID BD25410 or "Vidrio ScanImage 5" to configure a standard ScanImage 5 system with National Instruments representatives, rather than purchasing separate components below. This will be less error-prone and it includes the required accessories. This bundle is provided for the convenience of ScanImage 5 users - there is no mark-up cost. |
ScanImage 5 Resonant will use National Instruments PXI FlexRIO platform. The system consists of a: PXI chassis, FPGA Module, and digitizer module.
The NI system bundles with SI5 support include:
PXI Chassis: PXIe-1073 chassis typical. More advanced chassis supported as well.
FPGA Module: PXIe-7961R (smaller FPGA) & PXIe-7966R (larger FPGA) supported
Digitizer Module: NI 5732 (2 Chans/80MHz) & NI 5734 (4 Chans/120MHz) supported
- National Instruments can include extended warranty support for the hardware bundles, You will be given the option when placing the order. Please discuss with your local sales rep if you have questions.
- ScanImage 5 will include pre-complied FPGA bitfiles - one for each of the four FPGA/Digitizer combinations above. Theis whitepaper shows how to download bitfiles to FPGA hardware.
- The PXIe-7962R FPGA module will likely also be supported (bitfiles provided), but this will not be as extensively tested.
- The 7961R is suited for core imaging capabilities and limited future extensibility. The 7966 supports greater future extensibility.
- The standard PXIe-1073 chassis is a 5-slot 'remote controller' chassis connecting to the computer via a PCIe (PCI Express) card. Both PCIe card and cable are included.
Scanner Hardware
Tip |
---|
Sutter Instrument company can provide a scanner assembly with sound-proof housing, with accompanying electronics housing. If interested, please contact Rick Ayer at Sutter. |
For resonant scanned raster imaging, users require 1x each of:
Resonant Scanner: Cambridge Technologies CRS-8 or CRS-12 scanner. Includes control board.
Galvo Scanner: Cambridge Technologies 6210 or 6215 galvo system (typ. with 4-6mm mirror). Other analog-control galvos also supported.
Notes
CRS-12 support may not be ready by ScanImage 5 prerelease. Its support is planned by ScanImage 5 release date.
Galvo system's max slew rate can impact the frame rate achievable at larger fields-of-view. Slower slew rates require a larger number of resonant scanner line periods for galvo flyback.
Galvo Scanning Hardware
For galvo scanned raster imaging and future scan modes:
Digitizer Hardware
ScanImage 5 Galvo will support the following input digitizer options:
Family | Model Number(s) | Comments |
---|---|---|
PCIe X Series | PCIe-6351, PCIe-6353 | PCIe-6351/6353 recommended for no-Pockels/Pockels cases, respectively |
PXIe X Series | PXIe-6356, PXIe-6358 | PXIe boards fit into chassis used for resonant scanning (if applicable). PXIe-6356/6358 recommended for no-Pockels/Pockels cases, respectively. |
S Series | PCI-6110 | Not recommended for new systems, but will remain supported. A PCI slot and full-size computer case is required to house this board. |

Scanner Hardware
An X/Y analog-controlled galvo scanner pair is required. Cambridge Technologies 6210 or 6215 galvo system (typ. with 3-6mm mirrors) is typical. Galvo system characteristics impact attainable line speed and performance of future scan modes.

ScanImage 5 Scanner Hardware
ScanImage 5 requires a pair of scanners (one resonant and one galvo scanner) to achieve video-rate area scanning operation.
ScanImage 5 users can choose either:
scanner system that combines a resonant scanner and galvo scanner
scanner components - one resonant scanner and one galvo scanner
ScanImage 5 Scanner Systems
Sutter Instrument systems:
- Resonant Scan Box
- MOM-Resonant microscope systems
ScanImage 5 Resonant Scanner Components
Cambridge Technology components
- CRS 8Khz (part 6SC08KA012-02Y)
- CRS 12Khz (part 6SC12KA012-02Y)
- Classic CRS-8 scanner
ScanImage 5 Galvo Scanner Components
Any analog-driven galvo scanner component, including galvanometer-mounted mirror and servo driver circuit, can be used.
The following are typical choices from Cambridge Technology
Class 0 servo topology is recommended, but not required

ScanImage 5 DAQ Hardware
ScanImage 5 will use National Instruments PXI FlexRIO platform.
ScanImage 5 has required, user-selected, and user-optional DAQ components
Tip |
---|
Stay tuned for a National Instruments ScanImage 5 configuration tool We anticipate this may include small discounts on hardware |
User-Selected DAQ Components
Digitizer Module
FPGA Module
- Basic Option: PXIe-7961R
- Performance Option: PXIe-7975R
For SI 5, there will be no difference in operation.
Features in future versions (SI 2015 & beyond) may utilize the far
greater (~10x) image processing power of the PXIe-7975R, e.g. closed-loop experiments.
Tip | ||
---|---|---|
| ||
The PXIe-7975R option will be supported by ScanImage 5 by August 2014. Vidrio tentatively has access to a small pool of PXIe-7961R loaners Loaners are intended for users who purchase a PXIe-7975R |
User-Optional DAQ Components
PCIe-6321 option is cheaper, but requires additional wiring and uses a computer PCIe slot
