Overview
ScanImage 5 will:
- unify galvo and resonant scanning capabilities (ScanImage 3 and 4, respectively); and
- support the use of generic resonant scanning hardware with real-time FPGA processing.
By version 5.1, ScanImage 5 will support experiments combining resonant and galvo scanning. This will include random-access and other custom scan trajectories, suited for photostimulation and multi-site recording applications.
ScanImage 5 will have customization layers for both CPU and FPGA-based processing (latter for resonant scanned imaging only) which can be used to implement online or real-time analysis, including closed-loop experiments with parallel imaging and (photo)stimulus.

Resonant Scanning Hardware
For resonant scanned raster imaging, both digitizer hardware and scanner hardware are required.
Digitizer Hardware
National Instruments (NI) offers Bundle ID BD25410 or ("Vidrio ScanImage 5") to configure a standard ScanImage 5 system with NI representatives, rather than purchasing separate components below. This will be less error-prone and it includes the required accessories. This bundle is provided for the convenience of ScanImage 5 users - there is no mark-up cost.
ScanImage 5 Resonant will use National Instruments PXI FlexRIO platform.
The system consists of three components: PXI chassis, FPGA Module, and digitizer module.
The NI system bundles with SI5 support include:
Component Type | SI5 Supported Parts | Comments |
PXI Chassis | PXIe-1073 chassis |
|
---|---|---|
FPGA Module |
|
|
Digitizer Module | NI 5732 (2 Chans/80MHz) NI 5734 (4 Chans/120MHz) |
- National Instruments can include extended warranty support for the hardware bundles, You will be given the option when placing the order. Please discuss with your local sales rep if you have questions.
- ScanImage 5 will include pre-complied FPGA bitfiles - one for each of the FPGA/Digitizer combinations above. Whitepaper on how to download bitfiles to FPGA hardware.
Scanner Hardware
Sutter Components
Sutter Instrument company offers a Resonant Scan Box component combining the required components in a sound-proof housing.
Both the Sutter standalone Resonant Scan Box and their full MOM-Resonant microscope system will be compatible with ScanImage 5.
Note that Vidrio currently recommends waiting until testing of the new Cambridge Technology scanner system is completed (by April 1 2014) before purchasing scanner hardware. See note below.
Testing New Scanner Hardware
Cambridge Technology is recently offering a new CRS Resonant Scanner Driver board. This offers improved synhronization and is optimized for use with the maximal angle versions of their CRS scanner products.
Vidrio engineers have ordered this scanner and will test this new scanner system before April 1, 2014. (System 6SC08KA012-02Y with new 711-80159)
Prospective ScanImage 5 users are advised to wait for this testing before committing to a scanner hardware purchase.
ScanImage 5 is expected to work with classic CRS scanner systems - including the Sutter Resonant Scan Box system - but potentially with small additional electronics or reduced scan angle.
For resonant scanned raster imaging, users require 1x each of:
Resonant Scanner: Cambridge Technologies CRS-8 or CRS-12 scanner. Includes control board.
Galvo Scanner: Cambridge Technologies 6210 or 6215 galvo system (typ. with 4-6mm mirror), with servo control board. Other analog-control galvos also supported.
Notes
CRS-12 support will not be ready by ScanImage 5 prerelease. Its support is planned by ScanImage 5 release date.
Galvo system's max slew rate can impact the frame rate achievable at larger fields-of-view. Slower slew rates require a larger number of resonant scanner line periods for galvo flyback.
Galvo Scanning Hardware
For galvo scanned raster imaging and future scan modes:
Digitizer Hardware
ScanImage 5 Galvo will support the following input digitizer options:
Family | Model Number(s) | Comments |
---|---|---|
PCIe X Series | PCIe-6351, PCIe-6353 | PCIe-6351/6353 recommended for no-Pockels/Pockels cases, respectively |
PXIe X Series | PXIe-6356, PXIe-6358 | PXIe boards fit into chassis used for resonant scanning (if applicable). PXIe-6356/6358 recommended for no-Pockels/Pockels cases, respectively. |
S Series | PCI-6110 | Not recommended for new systems, but will remain supported. A PCI slot and full-size computer case is required to house this board. |
Scanner Hardware
An X/Y analog-controlled galvo scanner pair is required. Cambridge Technologies 6210 or 6215 galvo system (typ. with 3-6mm mirrors) is typical. Galvo system characteristics impact attainable line speed and performance of future scan modes.
Computer Hardware
ScanImage 5 (resonant and galvo modules) is expected to run on standard multi-core machines (e.g. iCore7) with at least 4GB RAM and at least 4 PCIe slots.
Example tested ScanImage 5 computer systems will be provided at the prerelease date.
